Berlin: Great Altar Capital

IonCapPerg

On display in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin are fragments of column capitals from the Great Altar. The above capital is part of a series of pillars which open out to the flight of steps from the altar court which was originally an Ancient Greek structure built in the 2nd century. A variant of the second series of Ionic hall column capitals of the Great Altar of Pergamon has volute pads in the form of lightning bolts.
