Bowes Museum: French Harp

On display in the Music Room is a French Harp which dates to circa 1780. Constructed of ebonised wood, the harp is painted and lacquered with ornamentation and gilding. The pine soundboard is decorated in polychrome with flowers, trophies of musical instruments and pastoral scenes.

The head is decorated with chinoiseries in gold and coloured lacquers and the end is carved with an acanthus scroll with pendant swags of flowers around a neo-classical bracket with gilt carving.
