Bowes Museum: Sea-Piece: Calm Hazy Morning

Sea-Piece

The above oil on canvas painting is the work of the 19th century French artist and printmaker Baron Jean Antoine Théodore Gudin. Dating to between 1860-1865, the painting depicts two large sea ships anchored off a sandy bay with smaller fishing boats moored at a jetty along the beach. Known for his painted naval scenes, Gudin was appointed official marine artist to the French state.
